The Cube
The Lost SymbolThe Cube is the massive cinder-block structure inside SMSC Pod Five that contains Katherine Solomon’s laboratory. Its destruction in a fire and explosion eliminates the secure workplace at the center of Katherine’s research and becomes a visible consequence of the attack on her and her assistant, Trish Dunne.
Setting and Function
The Cube stands at the back of SMSC Pod Five, behind the specimen-bay entrance. The patrolman who discovers the bay door open has never been permitted inside the pod, but recognizes the structure when a line of fire illuminates it. Its name gives the laboratory a distinct physical presence: it is not merely a room, but a substantial, enclosed structure within the larger storage bay.
The Cube houses Katherine’s laboratory and its equipment, including holographic storage units. The scene at the facility presents the lab as both a working research space and a protected interior; the patrolman remains outside its door as the fire advances toward it.
Attack and Destruction
An intruder sabotages access to the pod and leaves its specimen-bay door open. After the patrolman enters the darkened bay, the attacker escapes and a trail of burning fuel oil runs toward the Cube’s outer door. A sudden inrush of air precedes a hydrogen fireball, which erupts through the roof of SMSC Pod Five. The blast tears away the roof and scatters fragments of titanium mesh, electronic equipment, and melted silicon from the lab’s holographic storage units.
The Cube is not shown as an independent target with a stated motive; its destruction is part of the attack on Katherine’s laboratory. The sequence makes the consequences unmistakable, however: the research space is engulfed in an explosion, and its specialized equipment is destroyed or damaged.
Aftermath and Narrative Role
Katherine is driving north after calling emergency services to report the intruder and ask that Trish be found. She has also urged the dispatcher to investigate the place where she believes Peter Solomon is being held, and is heading toward the United States Library of Congress because she cannot reach Robert Langdon. At first, she mistakes the flash behind her for fireworks. When the fireball rises above the trees, she recognizes that the distant disaster is connected to the facility she has just left.
Later, while searching the United States Library of Congress’s digital collections for Albrecht Dürer’s Melencolia I, Katherine’s thoughts return to the laboratory in flames and to the possibility that Trish escaped. The Cube’s destruction therefore persists beyond the explosion itself: it interrupts Katherine’s work, sharpens her concern for her assistant, and shadows her attempt to interpret the clues that brought her and Langdon to the library.
